Dr. Samih Tarabichi, known as the best orthopedic surgeon in Dubai and globally as the “Godfather of Knee Replacement”, has transformed the field of joint replacement surgery through his groundbreaking work and tireless dedication. Born in Damascus, Syria, in 1953, Dr. Tarabichi graduated from the University of Medicine in Damascus in 1978 before embarking on a journey to the United States, where he began to specialize in arthroplasty (joint replacement). His medical training took him to prestigious institutions such as the University of Illinois, Ohio University, and McGill University, where he completed his education in 1987.
Dr. Tarabichi began practicing medicine in 1989 at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Florida, where he honed his skills in orthopedics and arthroplasty over the course of a decade. While many in his field were content to remain in the United States, often referred to as the “orthopedic paradise,” Dr. Tarabichi had a bigger vision. In 1996, he made the unexpected decision to relocate to Dubai, UAE, motivated by the desire to spend more time with his family while bringing advanced orthopedic care to the Middle East.
Dr. Tarabichi’s commitment to advancing the field of knee replacement in Dubai extends beyond clinical practice. In 2012, he founded the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR) Middle East, which has become one of the most successful orthopedic conferences in the region. This annual event brings together experts from around the world to discuss the latest advancements in joint care and foster collaboration in orthopedic research.

Pioneering Orthopedic Excellence
Upon arriving in Dubai, Dr. Tarabichi found himself performing only seven knee replacement surgeries in his first year. However, his vision and persistence would soon change that. Over time, his practice expanded, performing an average of 850 joint replacement surgeries per year, establishing him as one of the most prolific joint surgeons globally. His commitment to the region and his patients earned him the title of the “Father of Joint Surgery” in the Middle East.
In 1999, Dr. Tarabichi founded the first data bank on joint surgery in the Middle East, linking it to the University of Dundee in Scotland and other research institutions across Europe and the UAE. This data bank laid the groundwork for significant innovations in the field of arthroplasty.
Dr. Tarabichi’s most notable contribution to knee replacement in Dubai is his development of the Full Flexion Knee Joint. This joint design allows patients, especially those from Middle Eastern cultures, to fully bend their knees and sit on the ground comfortably—something that previous artificial joints could not achieve. This joint design was developed in collaboration with Zimmer, the world’s largest joint manufacturer, and is now used worldwide under the name Persona Knee Implant.
